Oneness

I read this phrase given by Silver Birch, an Indian spirit sage, “If God is the ocean we are waves in the ocean.” This phrase gave me a simple yet profound understanding of our connection with the Divine and with each other. We are part of God that has been given an individuality, consciousness, and free will. We as individuals cannot claim to be God because we are only a part of the whole of God, just a wave in the whole of the ocean. And like a wave in the ocean we are of the same energy as everyone else. Together, we are all one, one ocean, one Divine God.

A wave is made of two parts, water and energy. Water is physical matter same as our physical self. We are physical beings living in a physical world of matter. However, the wave is actually energy moving through the water. A wave appears to be physical matter, water, but it’s actually energy. We are energy, spiritual beings, a part of God moving through this physical world. Our physical selves are temporary and one day we will shed this body and our soul will return to the spirit world because we’re actually eternal spiritual being. Like the wave, we are not the physical part of ourselves, we are energy, spirit, a part of the whole of the Divine temporarily moving through this physical world.

With the countless individual waves in the ocean how can just one matter? It would seem that the loss of just one would be insignificant compared to all the countless individual waves in the whole of the ocean. But that is not true. You, me, and every individual one of us is an essential part of the whole of God, of spirit. “Not one sparrow falls from the tree that God…” God knows each one of us intimately because we all are a part of God.

We are all one is a concept that I spent years contemplating, trying to understand. I couldn’t get beyond looking at our physical lives, our individuality, and wondering how can I be one with the person who abuses others or who is full of hate and violence. We’re made up of two parts, our physical self and our spirit. Our spirit, the soul, is that part of us that is a part of God, the Divine. It is through our spirit that we are all connected and are one with God and each other. God is also nature, the birds, animals, plants and trees. We are also one with nature and all creatures great and small.

As a part of God, each individual one of us that raises our vibration closer to the perfect Love of the Divine raises the vibration of the whole, the whole of God. Our individual actions will either raise or lower the vibration of the whole. When we stand together, as one, in solidarity, we raise the vibration of the whole.
